Andrographis Paniculata

Commonly known as the King of Bitters, Mahatita or Kalmegh, Andrographis Paniculatis is a branched annual that is found throughout India,  Sri Lanka, south east asian and China. It has been used for generations to treat a range of illnesses from inflammation, respiratory infections, and fever to infectious diseases including Influenza, the common cold and malaria – even as an antidote against snake bite!

Constituents: The beneficial effects of Andrographis come from its high levels of  bitter tasting Terpernoids, the most well known being Andrographolide. These terpenoids are potent anti-inflammatories, immune stimulants and lower blood sugar and blood glucose. Andrographis is also rich with flavanoids, including 7-O-methylwogonin and skullcapflavone-1. These flavonoids have strong anti-inflammatory effects, inhibiting the release of inflammation promoting cytokines (TNFα, IL-1, IL-6) in the body.

Actions: By inhibiting the release of inflammatory cytokines, formulations of andrographis may help to reduce or shorten the duration of inflammation and fever due to bacterial and viral infections. A recent double blind study which trialled a combination of Andrographis and Siberian Ginseng to treat upper respiratory tract infections found that the combination significantly reduced symptom severity and shortened recovery time. Andrographolide and its derivatives also have been found to have an anti-HIV effect, limiting the viruses ability to reproduce in the body.

Works well with: Other immune supporting anti-inflammatory herbs; Siberian Ginseng, Echinacea and Olive Leaf.
Directions: Andrographis may be ingested as a tea, but due to its bitterness, many prefer to take it as a powder or in capsules.
Country of origin: China
Contraindications: Pregnant and breastfeeding women should ask their doctor before using Andrographis. Andrographis may interact with similar medications and increase their effects. If this is your first time using andrographis, test for allergies before consuming.
